Have you heard of KAIN or Monrow t-shirts? They're both brands of extra soft, oversized t-shits for (gulp) $80. Luckily, I've discovered a similar style t at Nordstrom for about $20. These simple must-haves are now in my weekly wardrobe rotation. Pair with skinny jeans for the weekend or a high-waisted skirt for the office (add a blazer if you have to). Go'on and get'em.

The Bible is very clear about how we benefit when we worship God through surrender: “Agree with him and you will have peace at last! His favor will surround you if you will only admit that you were wrong” (Job 22:21 LB).
In surrender, you begin to really live the life God intended: “Only those who throw away their lives for my sake and for the sake of the Good News will ever know what it means to really live” (Mark 8:35 LB).

You are set free, liberated from self-preoccupation: “But offer yourselves to the ways of God and the freedom never quits. All your lives you’ve let sin tell you what to do. But thank God you’ve started listening to a new master, one whose commands set you free to live openly in his freedom!” (Romans 6:16-18 MSG).

God is able to use you in great ways.

Why did God choose Mary, of all women, to be the mother of Jesus? It was because she was totally surrendered to God. When the angel explained God’s improbable plan, she humbly responded, “I am the Lord’s servant! Let it happen as you have said” (Luke 1:38 CEV).
Nothing is more powerful than a surrendered life in the hands of God.

Genesis 1:27

Unlike animals, God made humans in His image. This is clearly stated in the first book of the Bible:

God created man in His own image, in the image of God
He created him; male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:27)

Breaking that down to its simplest form, God made Adam and Eve like Himself. And what would that include? He gave them intellectual ability---which is often referred to in the Scriptures as the mind. He also gave them emotional capabilities---which is frequently called the heart. And He gave them volitional capacity---which is the will. His desire was that they would use their minds to know God . . . and from their hearts, they would love God . . . and with their wills, they would obey God.

Great plan---but sin changed everything. When Adam and Eve sinned, their minds were blinded to the things of God, their hearts turned from loving Him to being afraid of Him, and their wills became stubborn and resistant, causing them to disobey rather than obey.

It's important to realize that, while we still bear God's image (we have a mind, emotion, and a will), the consequences of their sin remain with us today. Adam and Eve, having no parents, were created in perfection and were spiritually alive. However, when sin took place, it contaminated everything in them and around them, like a fast-moving polluted river. As a result, when we were born, that pollution was passed along, making us sinful creatures. So were our parents and theirs as well.

Unlike Adam and Eve, we were born spiritually dead, which means that in order to know God and love God and obey God, we need a spiritual rebirth. That's what Jesus meant when He said, "You must be born again" (John 3:7). That happens the moment we place our faith and trust in Jesus Christ---who died on the cross for our sins and rose again. Apart from a relationship with Him, knowing God personally isn't a possibility, loving God intimately cannot occur, and obeying God willingly won't happen.

Before we go further into the subject of our emotions in the next several devotionals, trying to understand how they work and why they affect us so significantly, it's important that these things not only be understood but accepted by faith.

If you have never trusted in Christ, let me urge you to do so right now.

‘Mr. ISU’ Earl Pond leaves lasting legacy

Earl R. Pond, known locally as ‘Mr. ISU’ and for whom the Idaho State University Pond Student Union Building is named, died Monday, July 21, from a sudden illness.

“We are truly grateful to Earl Pond for his leadership and commitment to Idaho State University and our community,” said Arthur C. Vailas, ISU President. “He will truly be remembered for his accomplishments and contributions to student life.”

Pond, 84, held a variety of positions at Idaho State University, where he worked for 33 years. He was also active in public service in the community. He held public offices for more than 24 years, including three-and-one-half years as the mayor of Pocatello and served many years on the Pocatello City Council.

But more important than his accomplishments, according to many of his friends, was his demeanor and outlook.

“Everybody on the campus knew him and he was just a great guy to be around,” said Babe Caccia, former ISU athlete, coach and athletic director. Caccia, then head ISU football coach, met Pond as a player on his team in 1946.

“He was a great guy for jokes and stuff, and always brought laughter and a little sunshine to the group,” Caccia said. “When he came around he always brought a smile and a laugh. We’re going to miss him.”

A native of Filer, Idaho, Pond began his long affiliation with Idaho State University as a student, enrolling in 1941. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II in Guam and China, he returned to ISU in 1946. He received his bachelor’s degree in accounting and pre-law in 1949.

Highlights of his college career included helping to found one of ISU’s best-known fraternities, Phi Sigma Kappa, and playing on the football team on both offense and defense for three years.

“He was just a good, all-around football player who could tackle and block,” Caccia said. “

Pond was the athletic business manager from 1949 to 1959. He was also graduate manager until 1959 and was general manager of the Associated Students of ISU, was in charge of the bookstore, and was in charge of the Student Union Food Services. He then became manager of the Student Union, a position he held for more than 23 years, and was also general manager of ASISU during that time.

His influence on the University is immeasurable and widespread.

“One of the important things to mention about Earl was that he always had a vision of ‘where we need to go from here,’” said Ernie Naftzger, currently a development officer in ISU Student Affairs. Naftzger had a 17-year working relationship with Pond that began in 1966, and has been a close friend to Pond since he retired from ISU in 1982. “He was always looking for ways of improving what we were offering and doing things for students.”

Pond was also instrumental in helping to create everything from the establishment of the ISU outdoor programs and the Early Learning Center, to creating the commuter bus service for students, Naftzger said.

“It was amazing what he could get done because of all his political contacts and his relationships with so many people in the community, which enabled us to do things that otherwise might be difficult to do.” Naftzger said. “He always knew the people who could help us get things done. Even if we just needed equipment to put on show, you could just call Earl and he’d know someone to talk with to get it.”

Idaho State University bestowed many honors on Pond. They included his induction into the ISU Sports Hall of Fame in 1960 and the William J. Bartz Award in 1979. The latter award is an honor given at ISU Homecoming to those who offer continued support and development of Idaho State University through personal actions, participation in University affairs and financial support.

Pond also was a past president of the ISU Alumni Association Board of Directors. The Earl R. Pond Student Union Building was named in his honor in 1985.

Pond met his future wife, a pharmacy major Mary T. Fogg, while attending college. The couple raised four children, three of whom graduated from ISU. Earl and Mary have supported the Bengal Foundation, the Freshman Scholarship Fund and the College of Education.

He was a member of various commissions and served as chairman of the Pocatello Regional Medical Center Health Care Foundation Board of Directors. The Idaho Statesman newspaper gave him its “Distinguished Citizen” award.

so it's been awhile. but i've been working! and through work i find things to post about. i am blessed with a job that allows me to recruit people to come to the great state of Texas (through blogging and the internet). and one of our big draws is shopping (obviously). most people can think of shopping as spending money. and some people can think of it as inspiration for decoration and art. this store in austin is called maya star. the jewelry and gifts are so fun. my favorite are these "bride" trays hung on the wall. what a fun idea. i think i might start hunting for old trays at flea markets and hang them as art!

Sometimes I wonder how can a person let go of letting their heart lead and whole-heartedly let Christ lead. I struggle with this daily and get too "locked" into "my plan." I think the first thing I say (actually I know it's the first thing I say) when I wake up in the morning is "Lord, captivate my thoughts." When I'm on vacation, I like to relax and let someone else be in charge. I seem to never worry because they "know the area". Hmm. Interesting. Well, I know that I can't be "on vacation" everyday, but I do know I can let someone else be in charge. So let's meditate on this:

Sometimes a certain scent can remind you of a sweet or not so sweet memory, like Victoria Secrets lotion, Love Spell. My hippocampus sparks when I walk around or even drive by a Costco because it reminds me of my parents. I love that feeling. It's so silly, but Ken and Sharon Pond truly enjoy going there and especially together. Every time I'm home, we end up running by Costco to pick something up. I came to realize this sweet association yesterday when I was in Plano. I found myself walking into Costco. I didn't need anything, but walking in sparked a little memory of my family. I bought a fountain Diet Coke and I was on my way back down the toll way.

Flow For A Cure

Tonight, my roommate, myself and some other friends did 108 Sun Salutations (yoga poses). It was 90 minutes of continuous yoga at YogaSport. We flowed to honor our loved ones who have either passed, battled or are now in remission from cancer. It was so powerful and I was moved by each and everyone who was there. Even one of the yoga instructors was a ovarian cancer survivor. Their energy was so positive, it was hard not to have a bad attitude when your own sweat was burning your eyes and you couldn't wipe it away cause your arms were hold up your body. But, it wasn't about us and burning calories (but I did think about that) it was about dedicating our time to remember our loved ones and pushing our healthy bodies that God has blessed us with. We raised $6,000 (!)which is going to either The American Cancer Society or to the Joanne Brookhart Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. It was such a wonderful time with the women and men who came out to practice yoga!! For more information on what we did click here

Creth and I went to a silent auction that benefited Hope's Door & the Jensen College Fund. Needless to say, with Creth as generous as he is came out of this with a new (and by new I mean old, new to him) couch, a memory foam pillow and a deep tissue massage. You know in Alien when that creature came out of her stomach. That is how I felt when my appendix was about to burst. The worst stomach ache I've ever had. Sunday, Creth, his family and J.Jones took care of me when I was admitted into the hospital for an emergency surgery to get that "no one knows what it does" organ out of my body. I am so blessed to have such wonderful people in my life to take care of me, since my family is in Idaho. My surgeon Lou Fox was amazing. He is at Medical City. If you have to have your appendix out, have Lou do it.

For my birthday, my sweet, handsome and thoughtful boyfriend, Creth, wanted to out do me since I got HIM so good with a surpise birthday party.

Well, he did.

Creth "cooked" a mediterranian feast (it was so yummy), my roommate, Jessica, baked delicious cup-cakes and everyone was there ready to celebrate. Special thanks to Ken and David for "holding down the place," so we could have the roof all to ourselves.

Creth organized this awesome party with a perfect guest list (he got all my buddies to come!) and menu!

Yes, that's right.

You'd never guess the dimple-faced football star was so fashionable. But I guess he enjoys a good fashion show every now and again. I saw him yesterday at Fashion at the Park or FATP. #9 was standing at the bar (they start serving the bubbly at 10 am) with a group of guys, I was pulling out the camera to take his picture and the Morning News snatched him before I could snap him.

Anyway, that was a highlight from the fashion shows. Everything else is pretty great. AND great people watching.

Cleaning House

Last week I threw out Worrying. It was getting old and in the way.

It kept me from being me; I couldn't do things God's way.

I threw out a book on MY PAST (didn't have time to read it anyway).
Replaced it with NEW GOALS, started reading it today.

I threw out hate and bad memories. (Remember how I treasured them so?)
Got me a NEW PHILOSOPHY too; threw out the old one from long ago.

Brought in some new books too, called I CAN, I WILL, AND I MUST.

Threw out I MIGHT, I THINK and I OUGHT. WOW, you should've seen the
dust.

I ran across an OLD FRIEND. Haven't seen him in a while.
I believe his name is GOD. Yes, I really like His style.

He helped me to do some cleaning and added some things Himself.
Like PRAYER, HOPE AND FAITH, Yes I placed them right on the shelf.

I picked up this special thing and placed it at the front door.
I FOUND IT-its called PEACE. Nothing gets me down anymore.

Yes, I've got my house looking nice.
Looks good around the place.
For things like Worry and Trouble there just isn't any space.

Its good to do a little house cleaning, get rid of the things on the
shelf.
It sure makes things brighter; maybe you should TRY IT YOURSELF.
